"There's the me in all white and it's really wintry," the Evanescence singer said on the set of the "Lithium" video on Wednesday, pointing to an elaborate array of snow-covered trees. "And then there's the all-in-black Amy under the surface of the water of this lake in the forest. So it's the happiness and the sorrow and we're almost singing to each other, trying to figure out how both of us can work."
Unlike the Little Red Riding Hood concept for the "Call Me When You're Sober" video, which was an abstract take on somewhat literal lyrics, the follow-up is a literal take on somewhat abstract lyrics.

"So it's not so in-your-face to make the video more literal," Lee justified of the video, which Paul Fedor (Sarah McLachlan, Seether) directed based on her concept. "Really, though, I think it's all about touching somebody and I hope it does that."

"Lithium," the second single from the recently released The Open Door, is about making the choice between the comfort of sorrow and the idea of happiness.

"You get in these cycles where you're stuck in bad situations or relationships or whatever and it's hard to make yourself get out even though it's negative and hard," Lee explained. "So that's sort of what it's about, breaking free."

She chose the title "Lithium," which is also the name of a classic Nirvana song, because it's "a metaphor for happiness from a negative point of view." "It's looking at it like, 'I don't want to numb myself and not feel anymore,' " added Lee, adorned in an elegant white dress, pale white makeup and bright red lipstick.

Evanescence decided to release "Lithium" only recently, as Lee struggled with the single-selection process.

"It was a really, really hard call because there were like four different songs I thought would be awesome for the second single," she explained. "But I think we got a couple [more] singles to go."

"Call Me When You're Sober," which Evanescence also shot in Hollywood, has been a "TRL" hit, and The Open Door followed accordingly, debuting atop the Billboard albums chart (see "Evanescence Butcher The Killers In Battle For Billboard #1").

"It's been a big wonderful surprise," Lee said of the success. "I definitely wrote the record thinking about myself and what I wanted and pushing myself to do better than what I've done. And I almost expected a lot of people to hate it because I love it so much and I wasn't trying to do it for anyone else. And you have to fotografie if you're not making any compromises, there's going to be haters, because it's definitely different from the first record. But everything I've heard has been very positive and it's a great feeling to have other people appreciate it too."

Behind-the-scenes drama leads to ‘Open Door' for Evanescence
The rock group's sophomore effort is fueled by intimate songs that reflect the personal and professional turmoil the band experienced following the success of its debut album, 2003's “Fallen.”

Evanescence sold nearly 14 million copies of its debut album, “Fallen” (2003), and won a pair of Grammy Awards, including one for best new artist. Group leader Amy Lee didn't exactly have a chance to bask in that success, however.
During the run of “Fallen,” which also included the hits “Bring Me to Life” and “Going Under,” co-founder/co-writer Ben Moody acrimoniously left the band. Then Lee suffered a well-publicized end to her relationship with Seether's Shaun Morgan. And then Moody's replacement, guitarist Terry Balsamo, suffered a stroke last October, as Evanescence was in the early stages of making its sophomore album, “The Open Door.”

That's a ton of turmoil for anybody, so many observers were surprised when “The Open Door” drew strong reviews and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with first-week sales of 447,000 copies, beating out well-hyped competition from modern-rock colleagues the Killers and Beck, as well as country legend George Strait.

Lee insists, however, that all the chaos didn't hamper her ability to write songs for the new record. Quite the opposite, in fact.

“I had so much built up to write about, it was crazy,” said the 24-year-old singer/songwriter, an Arkansas native who formed Evanescence with Moody after they met at a summer bible camp a dozen years ago. “So much happened to me during those couple years through recording ‘Fallen' and then the whole roller-coaster ride touring ‘Fallen' and everything that happened in our lives.

“I definitely went through a lot, and there was tons to talk about. And as I started writing, more drama started happening, and there was even more to talk about. So there was definitely plenty of fuel.”

The result is “The Open Door,” which falls not too far afield from “Fallen's” thundering, operatic goth/metal/industrial blend, but with a bigger and even more muscular sound and a wider dynamic sweep.

“I had just grown so much since the songs from ‘Fallen' were written, as a musician and as a performer and just as a person and everything,” said Lee, who before making the album moved from Los Angeles to New York.

It helped that she wasn't afraid to share her personal experiences in the new songs: For instance, the first single, “Call Me When You're Sober,” is among several that chronicle her breakup with Morgan.

“I'm stuck with everybody knowing exactly what I'm talking about,” said Lee, who dueted with Morgan on the Seether hit “Broken” (2004). “And if there's consequences for that, which there are, then I have to face them. But it's true, these things really happened to me, and it feels so good to just blurt them out.

“I feel like this album's a lot more intimate in a lot of ways. I can do the poetic stuff, and I still do tons of the metaphorical sort of weirdness, but I think I was hiding behind metaphors in the past, and now I don't care if what I'm singing about is obvious to everybody. I'm proud that I can be that intimate.”

Morgan, who last summer underwent substance-abuse rehabilitation, said in a separate interview that, while he and Lee “are not on good terms,” he was intrigued to hear that some of “The Open Door's” songs are “about what (a jerk) I am.”

“I have friends that have heard the album,” Morgan said, “and they don't want me to hear it. They think I will be super-offended. But I can handle it. It's not a big deal to me.”

Of course “The Open Door” is a big deal for more than what the songs are about. Lee said that the band's heavy touring to promote “Fallen,” particularly after Moody left, instilled more confidence not only in her but also in her bandmates.

“I think it makes sense that (“The Open Door”) sounds more mature and that it's from better musicians,” Lee said, “just because it is.”

She was also pleased that Balsamo, who joined Evanescence after leaving the hard-rock band Cold, proved to be a fertile collaborator and, she said, a more collegial presence than Moody.

“I felt like we were really alike, so I wasn't trying to be somebody in order to play with (Balsamo),” Lee said. “I didn't feel like I had to try to be cool or only play something awesome or else he'd think it was stupid. He wasn't sitting there judging me, so I felt free to play in front of him and to try stuff, and have him be willing to sit there and play around with it rather than shooting it down.”

One of Lee's most ambitious ideas was “Lacrymosa,” a bombastic, orchestrated track based on the section of the same name from Mozart's “Requiem,” which is her favorite piece of classical music.

“It's creepy and sad,” she said with a laugh, “and I always thought that it would sound awesome with loops and weirdness and metal guitars and stuff. It's a beautiful piece of music to start with, so I can't take too much credit, but I'm really in love with that song and so happy that I got to do it.”
